Mariachi Workshop Registration

High school mariachi groups can compete to win a $1,500 prize and scholarship designated for school-affiliated mariachi groups made up of 9th-12th grade students from Southern Arizona.

Workshop Levels

To attend any music workshop, participants must be able to read music and play an instrument.

Level I

Must be in 4th grade (minimum age is 10 years old) and must be able to read music with at least one year instruction in mariachi music.

Level II

Students must be able to read music and at least two or more years of instruction.

Level III

Must read music and at least four or more years of participation in mariachi or folklórico dance performance.

Masters

Must read music and at least 8 years performing experience in mariachi. The music at this level will be more challenging.

* Workshops are not meant to be private lessons; they are to enhance the knowledge that you already have about mariachi music and baile folklórico. One-on-one instruction is not available. The education committee reserves the right to reassign participants at recommendation of instructor during the initial session. Please select appropriate workshop level. Any reassignment of level must have a transfer slip signed by the instructor. Students assigned to Masters level must pay an additional fee before entering classroom. If you are changed from masters to a lower level you will receive a refund for the difference.

 

Required Apparel / Trajes

Mariachi students should bring their "traje de charro" or any mariachi traje. If you do not have one, black slacks or skirt and a white shirt will suffice.

Involvement in Participants Showcase

The Showcase is a concert where the participants showcase their talent. Workshop participants will be admitted to the Showcase with their wristbands and will have reserved seating in the balcony. If your group would like to perform, please indicate on the registration form.

  • Only 14 groups will have the opportunity to perform.
  • Performance assignments will be made when registration and fee are received.
  • Performance time is a total of 9 minutes.
  • Groups must consist of six (6) or more individuals.
  • If you are using recorded music (CD or cassette tape) please submit two copies to the La Frontera Tucson International Mariachi Conference office by deadline.
  • Music should be professionally recorded to ensure quality sound.
  • Please type (on a separate sheet) a brief history of the group and its development. Attach a group photo.

This information must be received with completed registration form in order for performance in the showcase to be considered.

Involvement at the Food City Fiesta de Garibaldi

A traditional re-creation of Garibaldi Plaza in Mexico City featuring food and game booths, mariachis and baile folklórico dancers. If your group would like to perform, please indicate on registration form. This event will take place at Reid Park DeMeester Orchestra area ( Park Map ). Admittance to the Fiesta de Garibaldi will be with wristbands only.

Performance Assignments

Assignments for the Participants Showcase and Food City Fiesta de Garibaldi are on a first-come basis when fee is received by earliest postmark.

Only participants registered will appear on stage.


Participant Dinner Reception

All registered participants are invited to attend a dinner in their honor on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Additional tickets MUST be purchased with registration and will NOT be sold on site.


Participant Pick-Up, Drop-Off

During workshops, participants may be dropped off and picked up at the Granada Street Lobby entrance of the Tucson Convention Center.

  • Please use the parking lot. DO NOT block or park in the Fire Lane; otherwise you will be fined or towed at your expense.
  • The night of the Espectacular Concert, students will meet in the Exhibition Hall “A” (Green Room). Parents may pick up children at the Green Room.

Please make arrangements for pick up after concert.

Workbooks

Workshop participants will receive ONLY ONE workbook.

A $30 fee will be charged to replace a lost or stolen workbook. Replacements are subject to quantity on hand.


I.D. Bracelet

  • Must be worn to gain entrance to any LFTIMC events.
  • It is non-transferable.
  • It is non-replaceable.
  • If bracelet is lost you will be charged the full amount.
  • If bracelet is altered in any way, for any reason, this will result in your immediate expulsion from all conference events.


Conduct

Aggressive behavior or physical confrontation will result in dismissal from the conferene with a refund. Alcohol or use of uncontrolled and illegal substances during the conference is also grounds for dismissal.
