2009 - Guadalupe de la Torre
Guadalupe de la Torre, renowned local artist, has once again painted the essence of the Tucson International Mariachi Conference and her art was chosen for the commemorative poster. This year the piece was done in watercolor and it joins her previous winning entries from 1984, 1985, 1986, 1991, 2002 and 2003.
2008 - Chris Carroll
Chris Carroll, a soon to be graduate of Pima Community College, with dual degrees in Design and Illustration, is a multiple award winning digital artist. He has experience working with advertising agencies, non-profit organizations, and local businesses. He follows the lesson learned under instructor Dennis Landry, who encourages students to design with passion and purpose. Chris is grateful for every opportunity he has been given. Currently the president of his schools AdFed student chapter he has made it his mission to create unique professional opportunities for other students.
2007 - Carl Leick
The 2007 prize was awarded for a painting done by Carl Leick of Green Valley, Arizona. Carl graduated from CAL State at San Jose with a BA degree in Commercial Art and began his career as staff artist as Sunset Magazine. After advanced coursework in advertising design and illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Carl worked with advertising agencies and studios in Los Angeles. He was eventually employed for two decades as a corporate designer and art director at Western Airlines. The Society of Illustrators and Art Director's Club of Los Angeles have honored him with numerous awards for his designs and illustrations.Motivated by his interest in education, in 1991 Carl completed the Masters Degree Program in Design offered by CAL State University in Los Angeles, and was issued a lifetime teaching credential from the State of California. During this time he was also doing independent studies with esteemed figurative artist Neil Boyle. Carl has had one-man shows in Atlanta and Providence. He is an active member of the Southern Arizona Arts Guild. Carl specializes in figure paintings of Hispanics as well as jazz musicians. Figurative and portraiture painting have always been Carl's passion. He is grateful to the folklórico dancers of Our Lady of Lourdes in Nogales for the willingness to model their beautiful costumes used in the winning painting.
2006 -
Karen Moss
Karen Moss, the winner of the 2006 Poster Art Contest, is a Digital Arts student at Pima Community College and will be graduating in the fall with an associate degree in Graphic Design. She has had a passion for animals and art since she was a little girl. A veterinary technician for 14 years before switching to graphic design, her flare for art was inspired by her mother who enjoys painting. At the West Campus. Karen has been taught by Dennis Landry, who encourages classes each year to enter the TIMC poster design contest. She says it is a thrill to win the prize and have a published piece of art work while still in college.
2005 – Tony Turner
The Tucson International Mariachi Conference is happy to congratulate Tony Turner as the winner of this year’s commemorative poster design contest. Tony is a Pima Community College (PCC) design student. He is taught by PCC Professor Dennis Landry “This isn’t the first design contest PCC students have won. We encourage our students to take on other projects outside of class such as entering design contests. It helps them gain exposure to the professional community.” Pima Community College runs a well-rounded education program promoting creativity and diversity.
2004 Poster Artist – Rafael Zamarripa
Sculptor, dancer, illustrator, and choreographer Rafael Zamarripa Castaneda founded the Ballet Folklórico de la Universidad de Colima in 1981 and in doing so he created a lasting tradition of expression for all cultures that love dance. Rafael Zamarripa lent his talents to this year’s Tucson International Mariachi Conference poster. Study the art of this man and his dance and you will see, as we do, the mariachi tradition of life, love and expression come alive in your life.
2003 – Guadalupe de le Torre
For the fifth time a painting by Guadalupe de la Torre has been chosen as the commemorative poster. This year’s acrylic pays special homage to the involvement of the children and the continuing tradition of both mariachi and folklórico.
2001 – Kim Ferranti and Dr Celestino Fernández
The concept for the poster titled “Fiebre de Música y Baile” ws generated to celebrate the continuing tradition of mariachi music and culture from generation to generation – la herencia. The poster celebrates this tradition through a photo montage of beloved artists and their children.
Kim Ferranti is a graduate of the University of Arizona, College of Architecture, where she has taught coursed on graphic design and sketching. Kim thinks of architecture as art, but she also likes the arts of photography, sketching and watercolor painting.
Dr Celestino Fernández has been at the University of Arizona since 1976 where he has held various positions, including professor of sociology. He has conducted research and written on several genres of Mexican music including corridos, sones and the canción ranchera. In addition to his sociological research, Celestino writes poetry and composes corridos.

2000 - Amando Peña Jr
Amado Peña is one of the most respected and sought after artists of the Southwest. The receipient of numerous awards and honors, Peña’s commitment remains to people and service to the community. His work for the March of Dimes and for the Native American Legal and Educational Fund is among his many contributions.
Specially commissioned for the 2000 Conference, Peña has created his first-ever mariachi artwork – a dramatic shift from his renowned Southwestern style. “Canciones de mi Pueblo,” a colorful multi-media collage was unveiled at the Art Exhibit during the Fiesta de Garibaldi.
Amado Peña was at many events during the Mariachi Conference including the Espectacular Concert where he signed commemorative posters.
Joining in on the fun of Saturday’s Fiesta de Garibaldi, Peña and other artists displayed Hispanic and Southwestern fine art and were at the Art Exhibit in Armory Park. True to his commitment to youth Peña also conducted a fine arts workshop for kids outside the Children’s Museum across from Armory Park.
